Timeline of Chobani Greek Yogurt Recall

In an unusual move, Chobani did not publicly announce the yogurt recall for many days after the problem was identified. Instead, they independently contacted stores and proactively removed and replaced the product, all while insisting their actions were a “market withdrawal” and not a recall. They called the problem “an issue of quality, not food safety.”

August 31 — Chobani issued the first public statement on their Facebook Page:

“We’re currently in the process of voluntarily removing and replacing some products from store shelves that did not meet our rigid quality standards.”

September 5 — Chobani and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an official yogurt recall. The CEO of Chobani issued a personal apology to customers and the following statement on their website:

“This type of mold is common in the dairy environment, particularly when using only natural ingredients that are absent of artificial preservatives … Over the past few days, with the help of our retail partners, we proactively withdrew product from store shelves.”

September 6 — Chobani identified the mold as Mucor circinelloides, an opportunistic pathogen that can cause life-threatening infections in people with weak immune systems. It grows in industrial stirred-tank fermenters, which may explain why it was found in Chobani yogurt.
